An essay titled “My Liberal Arts Education,” by Eric Kuhn ’09 is the top feature article on the home page of mediabistro.com and the third in a new series titled “J-School Confidential.” In his article, Kuhn articulates his reasons for deciding to attend a liberal arts college over a journalism school despite his goal of joining the industry upon graduation. He points to the many opportunities that Hamilton has offered him, from creating his own radio show on which he interviewed national political figures and media notables to interning in Washington D.C. for MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews."

According to Kuhn, “My liberal arts education allowed me to dabble in numerous types of media, rather than only majoring in, and focusing on, ‘newspaper’ or ‘television.’ I have tackled news writing for print, magazine, television, and new media without much competition. When I graduate, I will have both a formal liberal arts degree and an informal degree in hands-on journalism.”

Referencing his blogging for Huffington Post and CBSnews.com, Kuhn continued, “I have been able to help out with political coverage, because not only did I learn about political strategies and masterminds such as George Lakoff in the classroom, but I was able to interview him on my radio show as well. And I received my Murrow lesson when I interviewed his producers, Joe and Shirly Wershba, …”

Described by The Wall Street Journal as one of the “most influential blogs,” mediabistro.com has been described as “the best source on the web for media people.” The site has been listed among the best by Forbes, PC Magazine and Writer's Digest. “J-School Confidential” is a series filed by “media experts in the making” who chronicle their tales of learning the craft both in the academic setting and on the ground.
